Rutgers Fires Abusive Coach!

Spread The Love

It’s the video that has gone viral and has everyone talking — the unbelievable footage of Rutgers University head basketball coach Mike Rice abusing his own players!

In the video, Rice is seen punching, shoving and kicking players, as well as throwing basketballs at their heads.  Rice even hurls a few gay slurs at them too.

Initially, Rutgers merely suspended Rice for 3 games and fined him $50,000.  However, public sentiment forced their hand and the university pulled the plug on Mike Rice yesterday, finally firing him for his erratic and inexplicable behavior.

“I’ve let so many people down: my players, my administration, Rutgers University, the fans, my family, who’s sitting in their house just huddled around because of the fact their father was an embarrassment to them,” Rice said yesterday following his termination. “I want to tell everybody who’s believed in me that I’m deeply sorry for the pain and hardship that I’ve caused.”

Rice is being widely condemned for his coaching methods. “Don’t tell me that’s the old way,” said Hall of Famer and former Georgetown basketball coach John Thompson Jr. “That’s the wrong way.” He added that Rice’s actions were clearly “child abuse.”

Now, Athletic Director Tim Pernetti could soon be out of a job too, for overlooking the abusive behavior and allowing Rice to get by since November without proper disciplinary actions.

So, what is Rice’s problem?  Is he crazy of just stupid? Physical and mental abuse of players is not motivational and it certainly is not coaching.  And exactly how did Rice get away with all this for so long, with a mere slap on the wrist as his punishment once his boss found out?  Is Tim Pernetti just as much at fault as Mike Rice?

Inquiring minds want to know!

Thanks for featuring this story DJ. You asked: "So, what is Rice's problem? Is he crazy of just stupid?" No question in my mind. He's a bit of both. But here's what really got to me: Rice was allowed to get away with all that crap for 3 YRS (since 2010) and not ONE adult in that program said or did a thing to stop it UNTIL Murdock got pissed for not having his contract renewed and gave the video to ESPN a few days ago. Check this: Rice was hired at Rutgers in 2010. Next: So Murdock tells Pernetti. Pernetti reports the *problem* to Robert Barchi (Univ. Pres.) and then_supposedly without viewing so much as 1 sec of that damning video_Barchi orders an an "independent investigation." THEN based on the findings of that so-called "independent investigation" Rice is given an opportunity to "rehabilitate himself" while keeping his job. Then… Read more »

Hard to believe he got away with it for so long. Can't wait to see if criminal charges get filed.

"Institutional integrity demands that the AD and President be fired. It should be the core value of leadership. Lead and leave." ESPN Reader

Btw: A question many people are asking is "why didn't any of the players stand up to him?"..especially in light of the fact that most of them appear to be bigger and/or taller than Rice.

My answer would be: Obedience to authority (first and foremost), followed by players feeling powerless, fearing their names and reputations would be irreparably damaged in college and beyond.

Whether it's Penn State or Rutgers, just look at the degree of protection that was granted to the head-coaches of the 2 most prominent sports programs, football and basketball.

WHO, pray tell, is actually looking out for the health, well-being and safety of student athletes?

Certainly NOT the NCAA.

Mr. BD

I remember you mentioning this yesterday Truth then I immediately went to look at the video. Theres almost no words. What could make him think snatching players like rag dolls then throwing a ball in their face was good coaching? DJ asked if he's crazy or stupid and he is definitely both. I'm glad he got fired and he should go to jail. Lawsuits are coming next.

Looks like the University has threatened ..Ooops, I mean "ordered" athletes NOT to talk to the media.

As per Lizzie Crocker- writer at The Daily Beast:

"When I visited Rutgers on Wednesday, the news about Rice was blaring on every TV in the Livingston Student Center, but most student athletes refused to answer any questions about the controversy. They were adhering to a code of silence that had seemingly been reinforced by the institution.

“Our coach just told us not to talk to the media,” said one polite young man who plays football for Rutgers, removing his earphones beneath his hoodie as he walked to class. “I’m sorry, ma’am.” […]

This morning I learned that Jimmy Martelli (Rice's assistant coach) RESIGNED shortly after Rice was fired.

Turns out in the extended clip of the video given to ESPN it shows Martelli acting even crazier than Rice!!! Apparently that twisted piece of human waste tried to be so much like Rice that he was commonly known as "Baby Rice."

SEE: Additional video…and be forewarned, you may find Martelli to be even more sickening than Rice.

Now. I'm going to say something here that may sound crazy but….

After viewing the videos, seeing the actions of BOTH men (going out of their way to APPEAR tough, and their repeated use of ANTI-GAY slurs). Add to that: Rice and Martelli have been linked together (professionally) for quite some time. Martelli was Rice's "assistant" coach at Robert Morris for 3 yrs prior to Rice going to Rutgers. The ONLY staff person Rice took with him to Rutgers? Yep. Martelli.

In the additional video notice Martelli's um….mannerisms when he's lashing out at players.

Truth is, I suspect the primary root cause of their madness is that THEY'RE GAY, IN THE CLOSET (obviously) AND THEY'RE LOVERS.

Wow. DJ. I don't know whether to post THIS story here on in the *TGIF!* thread?

That's THREE down and ONE to go….Barchi, the President.
