The political world is remembering Democratic Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas.

Rep. Jackson Lee passed away last week in a Houston hospital after a short bout with pancreatic cancer. According to The Associated Press, her husband and family were by her side.
The no-nonsense congresswoman is being lauded for her work on domestic violence issues and for helping to make Juneteenth a national holiday. She served the 18th Congressional district of Houston in a seat that was once held by the late iconic Democratic leader, Barbara Jordan.
Sheila Jackson Lee ran for Mayor of Houston in 2023. When she lost that bid, she ran to retain her congressional seat. Her name is currently on the November 2024 election ballot, although a new candidate will need to be selected to replace her. Additionally, a special election will need to be held to fill her seat for the next few months.
President Joe Biden called Jackson Lee “a great American.”
“I had the honor of working with her during her nearly 30 years in Congress. No matter the issue — from delivering racial justice to building an economy for working people — she was unrelenting in her leadership.
“Jill and I send our love and condolences to her family, her constituents, and beloved colleagues of the Congressional Black Caucus.”
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott called Jackson Lee “a proud Texan and tireless advocate for the people of Houston.” US Sen. Ted Cruz also called her “a tireless advocate for Houston” and said he would “cherish our friendship and the laughs we shared throughout the years.”
Houston Mayor John Whitmire said the congresswoman “was a dedicated public servant and a champion for her constituents. Despite her illness, she worked as hard as she could for as long as she could for the 18th Congressional District.”
Sheila Jackson Lee was 74.

I am familiar with Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee’s name but not as familiar with her political history. Holding down the same seat that was previously held by the late, great Rep. Barbara Jordan is quite the legacy!
I recall, as a young child, that my mother and maternal grandmother were huge admirers of Barbara Jordan. In fact, my mother spoke very proper English, much like Rep. Jordan. But I digress.
