SO LONG TO SATURDAY MAIL
The U.S. Postal Service has announced it is considering eliminating Saturday mail delivery to help the money-hemorrhaging agency survive.
As if raising the cost of stamps every year wasn’t enough, the USPS is projecting a devastating shortfall of $7 billion. With email rapidly replacing “snail-mail”, online bill pay replacing the antiquated pay-by-mail method, and eVite and Facebook replacing birthday cards and party invitations, the USPS finds itself in a hole it never expected. Add to that the popularity of such services as Federal Express and United Parcel Service, and it’s easy to see why the Postal Service is feeling the weight of modern times. “We’re delivering fewer pieces of mail to more and more addresses every year,” said Los Angeles Postal Service spokesman Rich Maher. “Something’s gotta give.”
If the USPS is able to become a Monday through Friday operation only, it will take an act of Congress to do so. But even if Saturday service is eliminated, it could always be maintained for special services such as Express Mail or restored during times of heavy volume, such as the holidays. But for many people, the whole concept of “snail mail” — like writing checks to fill first-class envelopes, or sending birthday cards or party invitations — is a relic that is outdated and won’t be missed.
No mail on Saturday means no bills on Saturday! Bring it on. Besides there's always Express mail if its a must.
