Space Exploration Technologies Corp. is a private American aerospace manufacturer and space transportation services company founded by Elon Musk in 2002. The company was created so that the US could reach the International Space Station on its own and without needing to hitch a ride with Russia, which has been the tradition. Musk also hopes to eventually send private citizens into space via his rockets.
Bulky space suits have been retired in favor of slim, high-tech suits. Old-school levers and buttons from previous space modules have been replaced with modern touch screens. In fact, the craft has been designed to fly itself with little to no interference from the onboard astronauts.
Although Musk has worked very closely with NASA on the mission, this will be the first time a private company has launched men into space from US soil.
You can check out the launch live on Saturday. In the meantime, check out this video below and get a glimpse inside of SpaceX’s Dragon capsule.
