Speaker Paul Ryan, Republicans,
Dance Around Trump
It’s the ultimate game of “Having your cake and eating it too.” House Speaker Paul Ryan and various Republicans are trying to have it both ways when it comes to their GOP presidential nominee, Donald J. Trump. Â But why?
Politics
For months now, Trump has been uttering some of the most horrific and repulsive statements ever made by a presidential contender. Â His laundry-list of remarks include mocking a disabled journalist, saying Mexicans are rapists, Muslims are terrorists and should all be banned from the U.S., a Mexican-American judge is incapable of doing his job because of his race, as well as this past weekend’s lewd and lascivious words about women and their private parts.
In the words of the late poet emeritus Maya Angelou, “When someone shows you who they are, BELIEVE THEM!” Donald Trump has spent a lifetime showing us all exactly who he is. Â So, why is Speaker Paul Ryan, who is currently the highest-ranking Republican in Washington, still straddling the fence about who “The Donald” really is?
A variety of Republicans have come out publicly to denounce Trump and disavow any support of his candidacy. That list includes such GOP heavyweights as Sen. John McCain of Arizona, Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski, Â Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley, and more. However, Speaker Paul Ryan and a handful of other Republicans remain straddling the fence as they attempt to have it both ways when it comes to Trump. How is this possible?
Politics
On Monday, Ryan conducted a conference call with fellow Republicans, saying he will no longer defend Donald Trump, will not support Donald Trump, and will not campaign with Donald Trump, opting instead to use the next 29 days to focus on preserving his party’s control of Congress. However, when asked if he still stands by his previous endorsement of Trump for president, Ryan said yes!
A similar position was struck by Republican strategist and CNN contributor Scottie Nell Hughes, who called Trump’s comments about women deplorable and unfitting of the potential leader of the free world but still vowed to support him for president.
HUH???
How is it possible to despise racism, misogyny, Islamophobia, and rhetoric against the handicapped, but throw your full support behind a candidate who is an avowed racist, misogynist, supporter of religious segregation, and promoter of mocking the disabled????
Many Republicans have seen the writing on the wall, have written off winning the presidency in 2016, and have jumped off the Trump bandwagon before it crashes and burns. However, Paul Ryan still wants to have it both ways. Â He wants the public to see him join in their utter disgust against the actions of Donald Trump — but he also wants Republican voters to see him standing behind the GOP nominee, no matter how vile and despicable that nominee continues to be.
The only problem is, you can’t have it both ways. Â When all is said and done, Speaker Paul Ryan will learn this lesson the hard way.
How is it possible to despise racism, misogyny, Islamophobia, and rhetoric against the handicapped, but throw your full support behind a candidate who is an avowed racist, misogynist, supporter of religious segregation, and promoter of mocking the disabled???? [….] There. Right there DJ. You've summed up the madness that Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell and the entire GOP leadership must reckon with….and deservedly so. Look. There is NO actual leadership in the GOP and there hasn't been, IMO, since Newty, Tom Delay and the boyz blew themselves up with the government shutdowns of 1995 and 96 in failed attempts to end Bill Clinton's presidency (egged on by the likes of Rush Limbaugh and his rotten ilk). It's been pretty much downhill from there for the GOP. And the election of the first African-American President in U.S. history, in 2008, has brought the GOP's lack of real leadership into even starker view.… Read more »
