THE TAXMAN COMETH

Can you afford more taxes?  Well according to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and National Economic Council Director Larry Summers it may soon be necessary.  Appearing on ABC’s This Week, Geithner said the White House was not ready to rule out a tax hike to lower the federal deficit, while Summers said President Obama’s proposed health care overhaul needs funding from somewhere.  During the presidential campaign, Mr. Obama repeatedly vowed “you will not see any of your taxes increase one single dime.” But the simple reality remains that his ambitious overhaul of how Americans receive health care — promised without increasing the federal deficit — must be paid for.  And the likely target could be America’s middle class.  NOTHING is for certain yet as the administration is said to be scrambling to find alternative ways to pay for proposed programs.  Many also see the words of Geithner and Summers as merely a trial balloon floated by the administration to gauge public sentiment.  But anything is possible.
