TEACHER APOLOGIZES FOR BEATING

Spread The Love

Last week, OK WASSUP! reported on a Texas teacher who was fired for beating a 13-year-old student at a special needs school in Texas.  Now the fired teacher is apologizing for the incident and the pain it caused, while facing a lawsuit, assault charges and jail time.

“I am without excuse for my actions. I am very regretful and sorry that this incident has ever occurred,” Sherri Davis said. “If I could go back again, I would do things much, much differently.”

The student, Isaiah Johnson, said he thought his teacher was “playing around” when she backed him into a corner at his Houston-area school. But then he quickly realized it was no joke. “She started beating on her chest and she threw the desk and kicked the book,” Isaiah told GOOD MORNING AMERICA last Thursday. “I was … frightened.”

But despite the apology, Chip Lewis, the attorney for Ms. Davis said “there is a lot more to the story,” and stated that there are problems at the school with a lack of security and support for the teachers. He added that students at the school often assault teachers and nothing is ever done about it.  He also confirmed that there were other adults in the room, and said this incident was the result of poor management at the school.

The incident occurred at Jamie’s House Charter School in Houston, TX, which is an alternative school attended by at-risk middle and high school students. Interestingly, Ms. Davis has been Teacher of the Year for two out of the three years she has taught there.

Now how did she go from teacher of the year to this? I don't know but maybe we are seeing this from only one angle. Yes it looks bad to watch a grown adult teacher beat a child over and over. But I do know some of these schools are rough nowadays. Who knows what teachers have to put up with sometimes. I'm torn on this one.

"Now how did she go from teacher of the year to this?"Good question BD. As I expressed on a related post last week: I recognize that, generally speaking, teaching can be an extremely stressful_even dangerous profession. No doubt, teaching at an alternative school for "at-risk" middle and high school students takes that pressure to a whole other level, particularly if a school is poorly managed. But when a teacher has reached this violent point, he/she has stayed too long. He/she should get out BEFORE this happens.I still believe Ms. Davis to be unfit for continuing as a teacher_as well as any other teacher who stood around watching the incident unfold. But the school should be investigated and the administration hierarchy held accountable if it's found to have been negligent in its duties and responsibilities.
