Ted Cruz Quits; Trump Prevails

Tuesday night turned into the “Indiana Shocker” for the Republican Party, as GOP presidential candidate Ted Cruz dropped out of the race for the White House.

Ted Cruz suffered a devastating loss on Tuesday to Donald Trump and recognized the writing on the wall: it was time to call it a campaign. Trump bested Cruz by more than 15 percentage points (52.8% to 36.8%) in a state he desperately needed to win, clearing the path for Trump to become the presumptive Republican nominee for president.  History will likely mark the Indiana Primary as the official death date of the Republican Party.

Although Ted Cruz vowed to stay in the race for as long as he could see a realistic route to the nomination, Indiana effectively sealed the deal and made the math virtually impossible for him.

“From the beginning I’ve said that I would continue on as long as there was a viable path to victory. Tonight I’m sorry to say — it appears that path has been foreclosed,” Cruz said in concession remarks, as shouts of “NO!” emanated from the crowd. “Together we left it all on the field in Indiana. We gave it everything we’ve got, but the voters chose another path and so with a heavy heart, but with boundless optimism for the long-term future of our nation we are suspending our campaign.”

Ted Cruz pulled out all the stops in trying to survive the GOP primary contest.  He made a pact with John Kasich and the #NeverTrump movement that seems to have fizzled quickly.  He even made the odd choice of naming Carly Fiorina as his “running mate,” despite being far from winning the nomination and needing a political partner. Unfortunately for him, none of it worked.

Politics
Ted Cruz was never the darling of the Republican Party, but was instead seen as the lesser of 2 evils when it came to Donald Trump.  Former House Speaker John Boehner called Cruz “Lucifer in the flesh” and the most “miserable son of a bitch” he has ever worked with. Former Senator Judd Gregg called Cruz a “demagogue’s demagogue” who he’d never back. Republican stalwarts Trent Lott and Bob Dole also indicated they’d prefer Trump over Cruz.  With that sort of opposition, Cruz never had a chance.

As for Donald Trump, he was uncharacteristically gracious in his victory. “Ted Cruz is one hell of a competitor and he has got an amazing future,” Trump said  of his former rival. “So I want to congratulate Ted.  I know it’s tough,” he added.

Ted Cruz DEMOCRATSAs for Ohio Gov. John Kasich, he is still in the GOP race on paper, but is a virtual non-factor for the remainder of the election process. He and other former candidates may still be clinging to the hope of a contested convention that might open the possibility for one of them to steal the nomination.  Although such a scenario is still possible, the Republican National Committee did announce Trump as the presumptive nominee on Tuesday night.  To date, he has amassed 1,053 of the 1,237 delegates he needs to secure the nomination.

On the Democratic side, Sen. Bernie Sanders beat Hillary Clinton in Indiana 53.2% to 46.8%.  His win was a moral victory above all else, as Hillary Clinton is excessively far ahead in the delegate race and on track to go head to head against Donald Trump in the fall.

History will likely mark the Indiana Primary as the official death date of the Republican Party. […] So it is finished. Trump is effectively the leader of the Republican party, which means the Republican party as we've known it is "officially" …Dead. Well the signs have been clearly visible for years, to my eyes anyway, that the GOP was slowly but surely dying. For decades, the Repub leadership has deliberately, and with reckless abandon, sown the wind. Now they (and their wealthy puppet-masters) must reap the whirlwind…in the form of Donald.J.Trump -a real nasty, and dangerously unstable, Narcissistic piece of work. A man whose only oath of allegiance is to Himself. A lot of us knew that a time of reckoning was coming for the GOP. We didn't know when exactly. But we absolutely knew it coming. Reince Priebus and company will try their d*mndest to put the best spin… Read more »

NRO Reader: The Republican Party has been hijacked by a combination of the rage-addled and miscreants who were thought to have been neutered by the intelligent fusionism of Reagan. The slime has been reanimated and, like the Sioux buffalo jump, they will stampede the party over the cliff. In this hyper-ventilated environment, there is no room for rationality. Conservative candidates, unbeknownst to many at the start, had a huge headwind fueled by an element so incensed that they latched onto a thuggish boor because he fed the rage. He is all personality. Informed by Stone's National Enquirer, he's as illiterate a candidate as has ever graced a podium. The ignorance was always disguised by repulsive bluster. The party has been reduced to a cult of personality. I'm sorry Trumpkins but you can't insult your way to the nomination and expect to rally the victims to your cause. You'll discover that… Read more »

Mr. BD

So Trump is the head of the Repubs now? This is unbelievable. Who would have thought it a year ago? Like DJ said the race in Indiana will be seen as the day the Repub party officially died. And just like Truth I also took a look at some conservative sights just to see what they were saying. All hell has broke lose for a lot of them. Some people are even saying they will vote Hillary just because they can't vote for Trump in their right mind. This is all crazy.

Mr. BD

Aw you are fast Truth. You beat me to it. I just heard this.

Lol. I'm at work with my office-door closed BD checking out political blogs AND keeping an eye on CNN online.

I didn't beat you by more than a few minutes.

"I lied to myself for years about who my allies were. No more"

Excerpt:

…my days of watching crazy people gain readers & listeners right in front of me are over.

Ann Coulter, Gateway Pundit, Laura Ingraham, Michael Savage, Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly, Sarah Palin, Breitbart News, Matt Drudge, and scores of others, too many to list here. They are all people that at one time or another caused me to bury my face in my hands. Caused me more than once to say “wait…we ARE the stupid party?”

I’m done with it and I’m done with all of them. They are in this for money and power and influence and they think Donald Trump is their ticket. Hell, they may be right. And I’ll go down in flames with my principles before I join them. […]

"The crisis in the Republican Party is even worse than it looks" Excerpts: Donald Trump is going to be the Republican nominee for president, and this alarms ideological conservatives for several reasons: 1. They think he will lose badly to Hillary Clinton, perhaps so badly that Republicans lose control of both houses of Congress. 2. They are afraid that he will damage the brand of the Republican Party, making it harder to win future elections. 3. They believe that he lacks the temperament and character to serve as president. These are all good reasons to be alarmed, but there is also a fourth reason for alarm that is perhaps the most alarming of all for conservatives: His nomination could signal the death of orthodox conservatism as one of the two main forces in American public policy, since he is running away with the nomination despite being exposed as a nonconservative.… Read more »

"Donald Trump To Begin Fundraising ‘Right Away’"

"Republicans consider Clinton over Trump"

‘If this is who my party is, I don’t really identify with it anymore,’ one Republican says.

“The hour of reckoning for the Never Trump movement is now before us,” said Steve Schmidt, the GOP strategist who ran McCain’s 2008 campaign. “There are scores of these people who say they’ll still support the GOP nominee. That has been an incongruent position for some time, but never more so than it is now.”

Schmidt predicted that “a substantial amount of Republican officials who have worked in Republican administrations, especially on issues of defense and national security, will endorse Hillary Clinton in the campaign.” […] Politico

Chester

This is all a disaster in the making. Republicans have nobody to blame but themselves for everything that's happened. Trump for president is about to be a whole new reality show.

Random White Guy

I never thought this day would come but I can't support Trump. I'm going Democrat and voting Hillary.

Thurs. May 5, 2016 "What Now, Conservatives?" Excerpts: The party of Lincoln is in ruins. A minority of its primary voters have torched its founders’ legacy by voting for a man who combines old-school Democratic ideology, a bizarre form of hyper-violent isolationism, fringe conspiracy theories, and serial lies with an enthusiastic flock of online racists to create perhaps the most toxic electoral coalition since George Wallace. Then — to add insult to injury — multiple GOP leaders bulldozed the ashes by issuing nauseating calls for unity, foremost among them Reince Priebus. Reince, you should resign rather than spending one more ounce of personal energy supporting a reprehensible man. So, what now? If the conservative movement is to endure in the short term and prevail in the long term, it has to combine immediate short-term responses with a number of long-term strategic changes. This is a clarifying moment in American political… Read more »

NRO Reader:
I don't doubt Trump is going down to a huge defeat. Not a fan of Hillary and I think Democrats are experiencing a deep sense of buyer's remorse. But, in the end, when backs are against the wall a majority of Americans will do what they believe is best for the country.

Today Obama enjoys an outstanding level of approval from Democrats and his overall approvals continue to rise. Clearly, Obama is far and away the most popular politician in Washington and he will carry enormous persuasive political appeal next year. I think this is the larger, more toxic problem for conservatives. Hillary will never be popular. So, she will have to be competent. She will be dealing with a GOP also struggling to get off the canvas. This radioactive soup for both may actually produce a period of good governance. […]

BREAKING: Paul Ryan Says He CAN'T Endorse Donald Trump "Right Now"

In a striking interview on CNN, Ryan said he’s “not there yet” on supporting Trump, who effectively clinched the GOP nomination this week with a win in the Indiana primary that forced his remaining rivals from the race. Ryan said he has serious doubts about Trump’s commitment to conservative principles and GOP standards, saying the burden is on Trump to unify the party he hopes to lead.

“Conservatives want to know does he share our values,” Ryan said. “There are lots of questions that conservatives are going to want answers to.”

Ryan said if Trump hopes to bring together the Republican Party, he must provide “something that they’re proud to support and proud to be a part of.” […]
