TGIF: ‘HAPPY BIRTHDAY’ Has Its Price
We’ve all sung the well known birthday song a billion times. But did you know that any public delivery of the little ditty could cost you about $150,000??
Yes folks, you read correctly — HAPPY BIRTHDAY is not free. The song from 1893 was at one time in the public domain, but the rights to the song have been purchased by Warner Music Group. Since they now own the copyright, they have the right to be compensated whenever the song is sung on television, on the radio, or in person at any public venue, just like every other song. They have the right to stop a kid’s birthday party mid-verse into the song in the name of their financial interest. They may even sue you for copyright infringement and will win, since the song is their property.
Needless to say, the fix is on to return the song back to public domain and to protect children’s birthday parties everywhere. But until then, be careful where you sing HAPPY BIRTHDAY — the song could be the most expensive gift you ever give!
THANK GOD IT’S FRIDAY!
