CIA Director Leon Panetta shocked the halls of Washington recently, when he revealed the Central Intelligence Agency withheld information about a secret counterterrorism program from Congress for eight years on direct orders from former Vice-President Dick Cheney. The fact that the still top-secret program was completely hidden from Congress for so long is unfathomable and has deepened the mystery surrounding its secrecy.

Director Panetta immediately ended the program on June 23rd upon hearing of its existence and briefed two Senate Intelligence committees about it in separate closed sessions the very next day. Calls to Dick Cheney to provide an explanation about the secret program and why Congress was not briefed, have (not surprisingly) gone unreturned. This news comes in the wake of recent charges by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who was thrashed for saying the CIA often hid information from Congress. In light of this most recent news, it’s likely now that Speaker Pelosi knew what she was saying and will be exhonerated.
