The NAACP Did What?!?!?

Yesterday brought more fall out, surprise and suspense regarding the saga of racist LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling.  However, the most shocking surprise involves the NAACP — and not in a good way!

Top News Today
The Los Angeles chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has scheduled a May 15th banquet to honor Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti and Rev. Al Sharpton with a Person of the Year award, and Donald Sterling with a lifetime achievement award. Huh?????????

Oh, and this is not the first lifetime achievement award the NAACP has bestowed on Sterling, having honored him once before in 2009.  Huh?????????

In addition to the recorded telephone conversation clearly stating his distaste for black people, Sterling also has a well documented history of denying African-Americans housing and employment simply because of the color of their skin.  However, Sterling made a sizable donation to the local NAACP so as to stop the bleeding on reports of his racism, which apparently was all the historical civil rights organization needed to plan to honor him TWICE for a lifetime of achievements.

Top News Today
As expected, a usual band of conservative attention seekers raced to Sterling’s defense once his racism went viral.  Fox News questioned the legitimacy of the tape, while Donald Trump argued that Sterling was set-up by the girlfriend (he should know).  These conservative blowhards were expected to fall in line behind the likes of a Donald Sterling, but not the NAACP.

“He has a unique history of giving to the children of L.A.,” Leon Jenkins, president of the L.A. branch of the NAACP said of Sterling, adding that he frequently donates anywhere from 2,000 to 3,000 tickets a game to youth groups for nearly every Clippers home game.  However, now that Sterling’s recorded phone convo went viral, an embarrassed NAACP has since tweeted the following:

#DonaldSterling will not be receiving a lifetime achievement award from the LA Branch of the NAACP. #MTP—(@NAACP) April 27, 2014

With Donald Sterling’s years of documented racism, why was the NAACP ever honoring him at all?

"With Donald Sterling's years of documented racism, why was the NAACP ever honoring him at all?"

Exactly. And DJ, I know you're asking this question simply to point out the obvious. MONEY.

But you're right to call out the LA branch of the NAACP. And I'll go even further and say that that office should just Close. Up. Shop.

Given the magnitude of the shameful actions of that branch concerning their cozy little relationship with a WELL KNOWN racist, for "the LOVE of $$$," is more than enough in my eyes to FIRE everybody in that office, beginning with Leon Jenkins, and close that branch…For.Good.

(a side-note and observation)

More than a few folks are asking why the NBA (David Stern- Former NBA commissioner), didn't do something about Sterling a long time ago?

Only David Stern can answer that question. And, IMO, he should be made to answer it.

In the meantime, this I do know. Stern, Sterling and even Adam Silver (new NBA Commissioner) are all Jewish.

As I said. It's just an observation.

Luke

I am unsure where you are going with grouping Stern, Sterling and Silver together and then stating their religious affiliation. I would hate to be outraged over the discrimination of one group and then jump to conclusions over a group of men from a separate group. I hope you are not inferring that their religious affiliation is what made them inclined to ignore racism.

Mr. BD

The NAACP looks like fools. They should be embarrased. I have no words.

The Grio:
In the least surprising news of the day the President of the LA Chapter of the NAACP has a shady past. Back in the 90s Leon Jenkins was investigating for being a crooked judge in Detroit.

Even though he was acquitted and there were some questions about jury tampering, Jenkins lost his law license. [….]

I repeat. That branch should be closed.

Immediately.

Rich

I could not agree more, they should just completely scrap that office. To appear outraged now while you were gladly accepting money by the fistful shows that greed super ceded what was right. I am disappointed by so many individuals in this…and sadly, I feel more heads will roll in the coming weeks.

Susan

I don't understand how they missed this. Clearly they were blinded by the almighty dollar and less about the people that they are supposed to serve. If anything this is a teachable moment for both the Clippers and the LA Office of the NAACP. There are no innocent parties to be found.

Truthizz

As I said, it's just an oberseravtion.

BUT that observation for me had nothing to do with their "religious" affiliation (I don't know that any of them are "religious"?)…it was in fact prompted by the following recorded exchange between Sterling and his mistress:

Sterling: "It's the world! You go to Israel, the blacks are just treated like dogs."

The Mistress: "So do you have to treat them like that, too?"

Sterling: "The white Jews, there's white Jews and black Jews. Do you understand?"

Mistress: "And are the black Jews less than the white Jews?"

Sterling: "A hundred percent, fifty, a hundred percent."
