Tom Suozzi Wins Santos’ Seat In Congress
Democrat Tom Suozzi is headed back to the US Congress to represent the State of New York.
Politics :
On Tuesday, Suozzi handily defeated Republican candidate Mazi Melesa Pilip in the special New York election to replace ousted former congressman George Santos.
According to CNN, Tom Suozzi received 55.2% of the vote to 44.8% for Pilip. He will now return to the halls of Congress (where he previously served) and will officially replace Santos in the House of Representatives. He will also flip 1 additional seat in Congress to the Democrats.
To put it into context, Republicans now hold an extremely narrow 219-213 majority in the chamber, which means they can only afford to lose just 3 votes on any partisan measure.
The 61-year-old politician won on a platform that included immigration reform, abortion rights, the Israel-Hamas war, as well as opinions on President Joe Biden and Donald Trump. His success was also attributed to an ad that tied Pilip to George Santos, described her as an “ethical nightmare” and raised questions about her finances.
However, he was also able to speak to voters who have grown tired of divisive politics and the “Us vs Them” mentality presented by Donald Trump and his MAGA followers.
“He has the values that I have — to get things done but to take into consideration the people who are in need. And he represents the majority of the middle class,” said Jeanne DeChiaro, who voted for Suozzi in Syosset and said her biggest issues were abortion, immigration, the economy, and “the ability to be bipartisan.”
Congressman-elect Tom Suozzi will now serve out the remainder of George Santos’ term, which ends next January. Voters will then get to decide who should be a permanent replacement. Don’t be surprised to see Suozzi and Pilip face off again in November.
