Travel Ban Tweet Lands
Trump In Trouble
Donald Trump’s Twitter addiction has landed him in trouble once again. This time, his use of the phrase ‘Travel Ban’ in a set of combative and campaign-style tweets could (thankfully) put his entire plan to keep Muslims out of the US in jeopardy.
Politics
Since his days on the campaign trail, Donald Trump has consistently fooled himself into believing that he could halt terrorism in the US by simply banning Muslims from select countries (not doing business with the Trump organization) from entering the US. Nevermind those Muslims who are already in the US, or hail from countries not on the Trump hit-list, or White American males conducting homegrown terror. Trump insisted that a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States” was the answer to terrorism and was as simple as him instigating his “kingly” ban based on religious beliefs.
The only problem was, the courts and the constitution did not agree.
So, Trump and his cronies were forced to go back to the drawing board and change the semantics so that the final plan didn’t “appear” to be a Muslim travel ban when, in fact, it still was. The administration crafted a new version, dropped Iraq from the list of targeted countries and removed religious language from the final product in the hopes that it might pass constitutional muster.
It didn’t. Still, the courts and the constitution weren’t buying it.
A federal judge in Hawaii dismissed Trump’s plan by citing comments from White House adviser Stephen Miller, who suggested that changes from the original travel ban were merely cosmetic and would have little practical effect. The judge also pointed to Trump’s own anti-Muslim language during the presidential campaign — which was a constitutional no-no.
Despite Trump’s best efforts, multiple courts dismissed his Muslim travel ban plan multiple times. Vowing to not be outdone, Trump pledged to take his scheme all the way to the Supreme Court. The trick was to no longer brand or refer to it as a “Muslim travel ban,” but merely an American war on terror.
Well, that idea went out the window on Monday morning with a series of tweets from “The Donald:”
“People, the lawyers and the courts can call it whatever they want, but I am calling it what we need and what it is, a TRAVEL BAN!” Trump tweeted, catching off guard and disappointing his team of babysitters handlers.
Politics
Yes, despite months of his team attempting to rebrand the Muslim travel ban as “not really a ban,” Trump set his entire squad back to square one by putting his big foot in his big mouth. A carefully choreographed roll-out by the administration was upended by the Twitter-happy thumbs of the child-like Trump. Although his administration spent most of Monday trying to convince the American public not to pay attention to Trump’s tweets, the damage was already done.
Now, political analysts agree that Trump’s tweets have given fresh ammunition to those who argue that the revised travel ban still contains constitutionally suspect motives and is a thinly veiled effort to reinstate the original version.
“In general, talkative clients pose distinct difficulties for attorneys, as statements outside the court can frustrate strategies inside the court,” wrote conservative blogger Josh Blackman, associate professor at South Texas College of Law. “These difficulties are amplified exponentially when the client is the president of the United States, and he continuously sabotages his lawyers, who are struggling to defend his policies in an already-hostile arena.”
Interestingly, the husband of Trump’s former campaign manager and current “alternative facts” adviser, Kellyanne Conway, also weighed in.
George Conway, who was in the running for a top Justice Department job until he withdrew last week, said Trump’s tweets are almost certain to make it harder for the Solicitor General’s office to prevail at the Supreme Court.
“These tweets may make some people feel better, but they certainly won’t help the Office of Solicitor General get 5 votes in SCOTUS, which is what actually matters,” Conway said.
So, Donald Trump’s combative ways, loud mouth, and Twitter tirade have gotten him in trouble once again. Thankfully, his “Not-Really-A-Muslim-Travel-Ban” was exposed for what it is: A MUSLIM TRAVEL BAN. Now, all it will take is for the Supreme Court to remember that little document called the US Constitution and put Trump’s religious prejudices and beliefs that all (and only) Muslims are terrorists to rest once and for all!
Given ALL that Trump has shown Us and the World…about HIMSELF…Up-Close over the past 2 1/2 yrs, I strongly suspect the guy actually peaked -psychologically, intellectually and developmentally, at about the 7th or 8th grade level, if not the 5th or 6th grade level. Add to that – he's clearly affected by at least One personality disorder…classic narcissism. I would also include authoritarian personalty disorder to his list of extremely disturbing psycho-social, developmental and intellectual weaknesses. And if all that isn't bad enough it appears to me that his short-term memory is pretty much gone. He's not just a pathological liar….but most times he can't remember what he's said from one minute to the next. Sidenote: Now keep in mind. None of this…NONE of this..is news to the people closest to him, especially his family (wives, kids, sibs) and close friends. They've had a front-row seat to all of His… Read more »
