A Black Uber driver was killed by an elderly White man after he erroneously assumed the female driver was scamming him.

In Ohio, 61-year-old Loletha Hall is dead after 81-year-old William Brock shot her multiple times and then killed her. It all started when Brock received an anonymous phone call from a man demanding money — and everything went wrong from there.
Brock told authorities that “a male on the phone threatened him and his family” and demanded money to save them. The scammer sent a car to pick up the money and when the Uber driver arrived at Brock’s home, “he thought she was going to harm him.”
However, Brock’s version of the story was incomplete.
According to NBC News, Lt. Kristopher Shultz of the Clark County Sheriff’s Office explained that Brock received a “scam call” earlier in the day from a person “purporting to be someone from our courts who informed him a family member was incarcerated and that he had a bond of a significant amount of money.
“The calls turned from ‘I’m an officer in the court’ to ‘We have this subject hostage, this is a ransom demand,’ ” Shultz added.
A ride was then requested by the scam caller on the Uber app, sending the Uber driver to Brock’s home. Upon her arrival, Hall “did not have any idea” why she was there or what she was dispatched to pick up, Schultz said. However, Brock immediately assumed she was part of the scam, demanded to know who she was working with, took her cell phone, and blocked her from leaving.
While attempting to explain her innocence and back away from Brock waving a gun at her, Hall was shot 3 times. Ironically, he never called police while detaining her. It was only after the third shot “did he then make contact with authorities to report the incident.”
Following a preliminary investigation, authorities determined that Hall was “not associated with the male on the phone” conducting the scam, nor was she a threat to Brock.
Now, social media users want to know why Brock didn’t call police after he successfully detained the Uber driver, why he shot her 3 times even after she was backing away and on the ground incapacitated, and why Brock felt it was within his right to play judge and jury in the moment.
“This is a horrific tragedy and our hearts continue to be with Loletha’s loved ones as they grieve. We have been in contact with law enforcement and remain committed to supporting their investigation,” an Uber spokesperson said in a statement.
Brock was arrested last week and charged with murder. He pleaded not guilty and his bond was set at $200,000.
Did Brock overreact in the emotion of the moment, or is he guilty of murder? Did race play a factor in the elderly White man’s choice to shoot first and ask questions later of the Black Uber driver? In light of Brock’s advanced age, will justice be served?
