U.S. Saved From Fiscal Cliff

Spread The Love

In the waning hours of New Year’s Eve, the U.S. hit the debt ceiling.  By midnight, it was over the fiscal cliff.  However, late last night the government pulled itself back from the brink and successfully voted to end the fiscal cliff crisis.

In a vote of 257 to 167, the House of Representatives approved the 11th hour fiscal cliff bill that the White House reached with the Senate on Monday.  Previously, the Republican controlled House of Representatives had been less than compromising.  House Speaker John Boehner was unable to control his own conference, failing to get them to coalesce and agree to a deal he backed and brought unsuccessfully to a vote on the House floor.  However, once Republicans realized they were taking a PR hit and the brunt of blame for the fiscal debacle, it was necessary for them to finally come to an agreement.

The bill raises taxes on the top 2% of Americans, while protecting the middle class — a promise President Obama vowed during his reelection campaign.  This was monumental for Republicans, since they have been bound for many years to a pledge by conservative leader Grover Norquist against ever approving any tax increase.  Still, several Republicans, including former GOP vice-presidential nominee Paul Ryan, were forced to break rank and approve the bill.

President Obama held a late night press conference to announce the new fiscal cliff deal, before flying back to Hawaii to be with his family.  The bill includes the following:

– Tax rates will increase for couples making more than $450,000
– Itemized deductions cap for couples making more than $300,000
– Emergency Unemployment benefits will be extended for 1 year
– Estate tax will increase from 35% to 40%

The bill does not address the $16.4 trillion dollar debt ceiling or automatic federal spending cuts, which will have to be negotiated in later legislation.

Yes indeed. There's a lot more work to do.

But I commend the President on being able to get ANYTHING accomplished considering the kinds of politically destructive opponents he's had to battle thoughout his entire presidency.

Predictably right-wing extremists are livid over this deal:

Btw: A reader over at Free Republic ponders this question:

"How can Boner be re-elected? How can the House put him back in the leadership? How ? How? How?"

See: "REPUBLICAN HORROR NEW YEAR" http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2974093/

All indications are that not only is Boehner expected to be re-elected Speaker…but that he'll be re-elected by a comfortable margin…..which (if true) will mean that the Tea-party faction (which has aggressively tried to force him out) is effectively powerless.

Oh my gosh! …and THIS has got to be the JOKE-Quote of the Day:

"Obama Fiscal Cliff Victory Could Invite Years of Warfare With the GOP"

The president is riding high now that many Republicans have joined in raising taxes on the wealthy. But Howard Kurtz says it could prove a pyrrhic victory that could threaten his second-term agenda. [….]

HAH. As opposed to WHAT Howey??? The cakewalk the President has had the last 4 YEARS?!

Honestly. (smh AND rolling my eyes at such an absurd *warning*)

Mr. BD

Happy New Year everybody.

This whole fiscal thing was a big joke. Republicans were playing all big like they had all the power. Looks like they forgot they lost the election. Now they had to settle for a deal at the last minute when they could have avoided all this in the first place. You're right Truth, its gonna be hard to see how Boener gets re elected after this mess.

Actually BD I think Boehner has a good chance of being re-elcted Speaker which will mean another epic FAIL on the part of hardline rightwingers (mostly tea-party extremists) who've been actively YELLING support for his ouster.

Welp. Tomorrow's vote will certainly tell the story.
