Did Van Jones HAVE to resign? As lawmakers return to work after the holiday weekend, it’s the question many in Washington are scratching their heads wanting to know.

For anyone unaware of the story, Van Jones is a young, exceptionally gifted civil rights activist and Yale educated attorney, who served as Green Jobs Czar within the Obama administration. But over the weekend, after weeks of on-air berating from Glenn Beck and FOX NEWS, Jones resigned amid a furor involving his signature on a 2004 petition questioning the government’s involvement in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Supporters say the White House surely knew his background when they appointed him and that his talents are far too important for this administration to lose. Jones is the first African-American to write a best selling environmental book while Special Adviser for Green Jobs on the White House Council on Environmental Quality. Time magazine also named Jones one of the 100 most influential people in the world earlier this year. Former Vice-President Al Gore is a fan and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said his best-selling book, GREEN COLLAR, perfectly showcased his “sparkling intelligence, powerful vision and deep empathy.” But as of today, Van Jones is out of a job. Why?

“He was swift-boated,” said Medea Benjamin, a co-founder of the anti-war group Code Pink who has known Jones for 15 years. “Van’s resignation is the tragic result of a retaliatory witch-hunt by Glenn Beck and Fox News Channel,” Color of Change co-founder James Rucker said Sunday. “Beck’s attacks against Van Jones haven’t been about finding the truth, they’ve been about changing the subject from his bigoted comments and continued race-baiting.” But with President Obama facing an uphill battle to gain bipartisan support on Health Care, Jones said in his resignation speech “I cannot in good conscience ask my colleagues to expend precious time and energy defending or explaining my past.”

Some say Van Jones should have stood his ground, fought his critics, and kept his job. But others say you NEVER embarrass the President of the United States, particularly with a full fledged health care battle on the horizon. So the question remains: Did Van Jones HAVE to resign? You decide!
