Vice-President Biden announced his son’s death, saying that he died of brain cancer.

“It is with broken hearts that Hallie, Hunter, Ashley, Jill and I announce the passing of our husband, brother and son, Beau, after he battled brain cancer with the same integrity, courage and strength he demonstrated every day of his life.”

“In the words of the Biden family: Beau Biden was, quite simply, the finest man any of us have ever known.”

Known best by his nickname “Beau,” Biden spent a greater part of last week receiving treatment at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Washington. In 2010, he suffered what officials described as a mild stroke.  Then in 2013, he was admitted to the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston after what White House officials described at the time as “an episode of disorientation and weakness.”  It was then that doctors removed a small lesion from his brain.

Beau Biden’s death is the second tragic loss for the vice-president, whose first wife, Neilia, and 13-month-old daughter, Naomi, were killed in a car accident in 1972 after the station wagon they were driving while Christmas shopping was hit by a tractor-trailer. Beau Biden and his brother, Hunter, were both injured in the crash, but both survived.

Born on February 3, 1969, in Wilmington, DE, Beau Biden appeared to be a natural to follow in his father’s footsteps toward national political success.  A lawyer by training, Biden joined the Delaware National Guard in 2003, serving as a major in the Judge Advocate General Corps.  His unit was deployed to Iraq in 2008 during his father’s run for vice president.  Fortunately, he was able to surprise his father by receiving a temporary leave to attend the Obama-Biden inauguration in 2009.

Biden served 2 terms as the very popular Democratic Attorney General of Delaware, before announcing last year that he would not seek for a 3rd term so he could make a bid for governor in 2016.  As recently as February, various Delaware politicians close to Biden were confident that he still planned to run for governor in 2016. But Biden’s health deteriorated in recent weeks and he was taken to Walter Reed on May 20th.

Joseph “Beau” Biden was 46.

Honestly, I was shockd when I heard the news on CNN yesterday morning. I did not know Beau was battling such a life-threatening illness.

I can only imagine the heartbreak and heartache Joe Biden and the Biden family must be experiencing at this time.

May he R.I.P.

Mr. BD

This was shocking and sad. I know that family must be feeling a lot of pain right now. RIP.
