Don’t look now, but white supremacy is at it again. This time, a Virginia state of emergency has been declared ahead of yet another Charlottesville-like march of angry white males with guns planned for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

On Wednesday, Gov. Ralph Northam declared a Virginia state of emergency due to “credible intelligence” of threats of violence and “extremist rhetoric” similar to what occurred prior to the violent Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville in August of 2017. The governor announced that authorities believe “armed militia groups plan to storm the Capitol” during Monday’s MLK Day rally in Richmond, prompting a temporary ban against individuals carrying firearms while on Capitol grounds.
“No weapons will be allowed on Capitol grounds. Everything from sticks and bats to chains and projectiles” will be banned, Northam said. “Intelligence shows that armed militia groups plan to storm the Capitol,” he added.
Just in time for the Martin Luther King, Jr. national holiday, the January 20th event was organized by the Virginia Citizens Defense League, a pro-2nd Amendment organization. They planned the march in opposition to new gun control legislation introduced by the Democratic state Legislature.
The group has dubbed the event “Lobby Day,” although various armed militia groups planning to attend are describing the event as a “boogaloo” — a term white supremacist and far-right groups use to describe a 2nd civil war.
More than 5,000 people took to the group’s Facebook page to confirm that they plan to attend. However, the governor declared the Virginia state of emergency once event organizers bragged that as many as 100,000 could show up.
“Unfortunately, they have unleashed something much larger, something they may not be able to control,” Gov. Northam said.
In defiance of the Virginia state of emergency, several attendees have already said they won’t comply with calls to leave their weapons at home and that they will arrive in Richmond with guns out, proud, and at the ready.
What are these white males so angry about and scared of happening? Imagine if 100,000 black men gathered in ANY American city armed with guns while shouting about their 2nd amendment rights. The National Guard would be called.
So, welcome to 2020 and a brand new angry white male/white supremacist/armed militia march. Happy MLK Day!
