‘Wetback’ Remark Sets Back GOP
Late last week, folks from coast to coast gasped in disbelief when Republican Congressman Don Young (R-Alaska) made this remark about Mexicans:
“My father had a ranch; we used to have 50-60 wetbacks to pick tomatoes. It takes two people to pick the same tomatoes now. It’s all done by machine.”
But why was everyone so shocked?
For years, the GOP has been the party for old, white, conservative men. Despite their recent efforts to put “lipstick on a pig” and pretend to have magically become inclusive to everyone, make no bones about it — they’re still the party for old, white, conservative men.
Following Rep. Young’s remarks, Republicans were quick to distance themselves and publicly chastise him. But it’s all a rouse. Young didn’t speak out of turn or make a rogue comment that does not represent the party correctly. On the contrary. Young said EXACTLY what many in the party believe. He just got caught being honest, when Republicans would have rather fooled the country into believing they somehow reinvented themselves in some extreme makeover.
With minorites (African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians, etc.) quickly becoming the majority in America, Republicans see the writing on the wall. They know that unless they want to be relegated to being the party of the segregated south that continues to lose national elections, they have to at least appear to be a party that has something legitimate to offer minorities. But don’t be bamboozled or hoodwinked. Nothing has changed in the GOP, other than their desire to win at all costs.
The Republican Party is still the party for old, white, conservative men. And the 80-year-old Congressman Young just proved it!
