White Evangelicals + Trumpism vs. The Christian Faith

Spread The Love

White evangelicals have a dilemma. The rise and fall of Donald Trump has left them between a rock and a hard place in a bitter battle of choice between Trumpism and their Christian faith.

Christianity
Among the crowd of riotous terrorists storming the US Capitol on January 6th were MAGA sycophants, white supremacists, and yes, White evangelicals of the Christian faith. Blended among the chants of “Hang Mike Pence” and “Kill Pelosi” were speakers blaring Christian pop music as well as some “Christian” participants invoking God while smashing windows and advancing the insurrection.

White Evangelicals

How have so-called Christians been able to listen to and spread hoards of known Trump lies over the years while still maintaining a connection to their spiritual faith? Better yet, how does someone call themselves Christian in one breath but shout “Hang Mike Pence” or “Kill Pelosi” in another?

The answer is… complicated. Although, Trumpism rarely comes with a helping of logic or common sense.

However, the dangers are far more severe than most realize. For just like Trump’s Republican Party, Christians are finding themselves splintered over the events of January 6th and infighting over a battle of Trumpism vs. Christianity.

On the day after the Capitol insurrection, conservative preacher Jeremiah Johnson issued a public apology to America and suggested that he thought God removed Donald Trump from office because of his pride and arrogance, as well as to humble those who had fervently supported him.

Needless to say, the ‘Christian’ response against him was swift and vicious.

White Evangelicals

“Over the last 72 hours, I have received multiple death threats and thousands upon thousands of emails from Christians saying the nastiest and most vulgar things I have ever heard toward my family and ministry,” Johnson wrote on Facebook. “I have been labeled a coward, sellout, a traitor to the Holy Spirit, and cussed out at least 500 times.

“I have been flabbergasted at the barrage of continued conspiracy theories being sent every minute our way and the pure hatred being unleashed,” he continued. “To my great heartache, I’m convinced parts of the prophetic/charismatic movement are far SICKER than I could have ever dreamed of.”

He was not alone.

In a modern-day battle of good vs. evil, other prominent Christians have come forward in the hopes of reminding mostly white evangelicals of the commandments “Thou Shalt Not Lie,” “Thou Shalt Not Kill,” and that “Thou Shalt Have No Other God Before Me” — even if his name is Donald Trump!

“We must all repent. Even the church needs to repent,” the Rev. Samuel Rodriguez (who once delivered a prayer at the Trump inaugural) told his congregation on Sunday.

“This was an assault on law. Attacking the Capitol was not patriotism. It was anarchy,” declared Trump-supporting Pastor John Hagee of Texas.

Even conservative talk show host Erick Erickson spoke truth to power for his fellow Christian conservatives, writing: “Everything — from the storming of the Capitol to people getting killed to social networks banning you to corporations not giving you money — everything is a logical consequence of you people lying relentlessly for two months and taking advantage of American patriots.”

White Evangelicals

Noted conservative David Brooks told The New York Times how he saw the brewing battle between Trumpism and Christianity.

“One core feature of Trumpism is that it forces you to betray every other commitment you might have: to the truth, moral character, the Sermon on the Mount, conservative principles, the Constitution. In defeat, some people are finally not willing to sacrifice all else on Trump’s altar,” he said. “The split we are seeing is not theological or philosophical. It’s a division between those who have become detached from reality and those who, however right-wing, are still in the real world.”

Conservative Christian writer and Iraqi war veteran David French said he is convinced the Republican Party is dead unless it borrows a page from the counterinsurgency handbook and separates the insurgents from the rest of the population. Or, in other words, in order for the GOP to save itself from the destruction of Trumpism and salvage its relationship with Christian doctrine, it must prosecute the rioters, impeach and convict Donald Trump, and not tolerate cyberterrorism within any American community or congregation.

Regrettably, white evangelicals, ultra-conservatives, and others have all merged under the radical MAGA flag of Trumpism and Donald Trump — even at the risk of ditching the morals of Christianity embedded in them since childhood.

So, it’s not at all hyperbole to believe that saving them all from themselves will indeed be a tall order.

Umm…DJ my friend, you may have just Opened up a real nasty can of worms here and I for one couldn’t be more pleased. Thank you so much for posting about this!!! I may slightly disagree with you on one or two points but you’ve certainly identified an insidious and NOW very obvious problem with “White Evangelicals and Trumpism” versus “The Christian Faith.” As it is with most everything in Life “Actions speak louder than words.” However, thanks to their ignorance, arrogance and just pure hatred of Non-white “Others” White evangelicals who support Trump have REVEALED themselves -through words AND deeds – to be Who and What they truly are. And frankly, based on ALL they’ve said and done I say there’s pretty much NOTHING “Christian” about that Evil-azz group. In fact, they ARE exactly who I thought they were. A bunch of White supremacist Liars, Bigots, Fake alphas and… Read more »

Okay so here’s a slight disagreement I have with your take on this………. I don’t believe that “Christians” are “splintered” at all because I don’t believe that any true Christian of conscience and Faith could or would ever be able to talk himself or herself into supporting such a creature as Trump. Not only does it defy ALL logic and reason but it also defies Truth. Of course, people Lie to themselves all the time – and I would posit none more so than White evangelical supporters of Trump. I’m not surprised they’ve convinced themselves THEY are the “True patriots” in America and the “true” followers of Christ, while posing as “victims” of religious persecution and every other form of persecution under the sun. They’re full of sh*t….and they know it. . Btw- has anyone noticed the fact that a sizable percentage of White evangelicals are also QAnon believers. Coincidence?… Read more »

Hey Truth I see the splinter. Any time a church pastor gets death threats from people who call themselves Christian inside his own church that is a problem. Some of these church leaders and some Repubs are beginning to see they went too far. They should have spoke up about Trumpism a long time ago but they did not. Now they are trying to put the genie back in the bottle but it is too late.

All I’m saying is….when you consider the fact that Trump showed everyone who he was/is from jump (from the minute he descended the escalator in his hotel) and Everyday leading up to securing the Repub nomination for the presidency….I don’t see how any True Christian could have ever supported such a creature.

Yes, lots of people who claim to be “Christian” now want to distance themselves from Trump. But their support for him in the first place tells me they weren’t actually “Christians.” Let me put it this way – the “Jesus” they follow/followed is “Another” Jesus….a Jesus of their own making.

A Jesus I know absolutely nothing about.

Just a sidenote……………….. After watching the entire Trump sh*tshow play out over the past 5 yrs….and especially all of 2020 to present…..I’ve come to the conclusion that Trump ISN’T leading his supporters and he never has. It been his supporters who are leading him and always was. Trump is a lot like Rush Limbaugh. Both of those clowns watched which way the crowd was going and then ran to front of the circus, PRETENDING they’ve been leading all the time. But here’s why Trump should really be concerned. A number of “Proud Boys” members (and other extreme right-wing groups) who supported Trump are now expressing anger towards him. They feel betrayed and played by him – even though they knew exactly who and what he was when they supported him. But he failed to deliver on what he promised (and what they want most) to make America “White” again. Then… Read more »

This is a good point. Repubs are not scared of Trump they are scared of his followers. If they lose all those voters they are screwed. A lot of the things Trump did and said was red meat for his group which proves they are leading him. The way they turned on his so easy for not pardoning them makes the case.

Uh oh you went there today DJ. This should be good. Okay I am going to agree with you on all points made. There is a whole lot of pretend Christians out there who talk the talk but do not walk they walk. They are only Christian so they can act above everybody else. But if you check their life they are not living how they should be as a Christian. That is why these white evangelicals say they are of God but then go try to burn down the capitol and yell about hanging Mike Pence. It is the same group that would kill black people during the civil rights and say it was of God. Just like we were talking about yesterday these are all lost people. Something is missing in their life plus they are just sick. There is a whole lot of racism mixed in there… Read more »

New York Times: Before self-proclaimed members of the far-right group the Proud Boys marched toward the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, they stopped to kneel in the street and prayed in the name of Jesus. The group, whose participants have espoused misogynistic and anti-immigrant views, prayed for God to bring “reformation and revival.” They gave thanks for “the wonderful nation we’ve all been blessed to be in.” They asked God for the restoration of their “value systems,” and for the “courage and strength to both represent you and represent our culture well.” And they invoked the divine protection for what was to come. Then they rose. Their leader declared into a bullhorn that the media must “get the hell out of my way.” And then they moved toward the Capitol. The presence of Christian rituals, symbols and language was unmistakable on Wednesday in Washington. There was a mock campaign banner, “Jesus… Read more »

I am reminded of Americans who called themselves “Christians” and supported Hitler and (to a lesser degree) even Mussolini. Those Americans also followed a “Jesus” I know nothing about.

(sidenote) Trump reminds me of even weaker and more delusional version of Mussolini.
