Recently, the vice-president of the Former Majority Association for Equality awarded a $500 scholarship to a white student. But what’s most unique about this story is that the money is part of a “whites only” scholarship. Oh, and the vice-president who created it is a black man!
Marcus Carter, vice-president of FMAE, says he joined the group because he served 2 tours of duty in Iraq and thinks awarding college scholarships to anyone is beneficial to everyone. He believes that since there are already plenty of scholarships for African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians and native Americans, he wanted to devote his life to providing college support to the forgotten group of Caucasians. “Just because you don’t benefit directly doesn’t mean it isn’t beneficial,” the 27-year-old Carter explained. Hmmm…
But Carter is under fire and is being ridiculed by many who are having a hard time taking him seriously. Critics say the American system has been set up for generations to provide whites with the tools, means and finances to seek higher education and to succeed however they please. They also point out that for centuries, blacks were not allowed to even seek an education in the U.S., and were physically blocked from entering schools in certain regions of the country. So the thought of a black man dedicating his life to providing scholarships that are not open to everyone, but are for “whites only” has been a bit difficult for some to swallow.
Still, Carter is not deterred and says helping whites find scholarships is what he and his colleagues will continue to do. “I go to sleep knowing that I am doing something good for society,” he said. “I’m being a productive member of society in my own heart.”
