Wife Of Former VP Walter Mondale Dies

Mrs. Mondale, known as an arts patron who saw her husband rise from the U.S. Senate to become Jimmy Carter’s vice president and then the Democratic Party’s 1984 presidential nominee, passed away Monday afternoon after entering hospice care last Friday. Her sons Ted and William, and other family members were at her side at the time of her passing.
“We are grateful for the expressions of love and support we have received. Joan was greatly loved by many. We will miss her dearly,” Walter Mondale said in the family’s statement.
President Obama issued a statement Monday saying, “Through her contributions to the Federal Council on the Arts and Humanities and the Kennedy Center, (Joan Mondale) passionately advocated for the role of art in the life of our nation and the promotion of understanding worldwide. Our thoughts and prayers are with Vice President Mondale and his family today as we remember with gratitude ‘Joan of Art’ and her service to our nation.”
Current Events
Services are scheduled for Saturday at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis, where the Mondales have been longtime members.
Joan Mondale was 83.
