World Stopped Rotating = Catastrophe

Spread The Love

Have you ever wondered what would happen if the world stopped revolving for just 1 second?

Science
The question was posed to astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson during an old television segment with the late Larry King — and his response was catastrophic.

“That would be disastrous – disastrous,” deGrasse Tyson said.

He explained that because the earth is moving at an impressive 800 miles per hour (faster than the speed of sound), we are all moving with it at the same speed. If the earth magically stopped moving for even a second, it would be the equivalent of traveling at 800 MPH in a car and then hitting a brick wall. Your body would be flung out of the car at 800 MPH — which clearly wouldn’t end well.

“If you stopped Earth and you weren’t seat belt buckled to the Earth, you would fall over and roll 800 miles an hour due East. It would kill everyone on Earth. People would be flying out of windows, and that would just be a bad day on Earth,” deGrasse Tyson added.

Yes, when we travel inside a car, train, or plane, our bodies are traveling through the air at the exact speed of the vehicle we’re in. Well, the same concept applies to the world. In fact, if the earth did stop rotating, the force would very likely fling humans into space.

Check out the video explanation from deGrasse Tyson below and prepare to be amazed.

THANK GOD IT’S FRIDAY!

This is very interesting. I never realized we move with the earth so fast.

Wow! I’m with Wil. I had no idea that Earth is revolving at 800 mph and that We are moving just that fast right along with it. Incredible!

What an interesting topic. Thanks for DJ brining this to our attention!

Something new for me to learn about. I love it!
