Zaila Avant Garde Makes Spelling History
Congratulations to Zaila Avant Garde for making history as the first African-American US Spelling Bee champion.

The Harvey, Louisiana 14-year-old was crowned the winner last week after being challenged to spell the word M-U-R-R-A-Y-A, which she did with ease.
“Now I get to get a nice trophy, which is the best part of any win,” she said in an interview on ESPN, which broadcast the contest. Of course, she also won a $50,000 cash prize which is not too shabby.
On Friday morning, Zaila said on “Good Morning America” that she hopes to see more African American students “doing well in the Scripps Spelling Bee” in the years to come.
Interestingly, spelling is only one of the many talents Zaila Avant Garde possesses. She also holds 3 Guinness world records for dribbling, bouncing, and juggling basketballs (again, not too shabby).
Check out the video below and watch Zaila on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” as she dribbles 6 basketballs all while spelling at the same time.
THANK GOD IT’S FRIDAY!
Thanks for posting this DJ.
That young lady truly is a rare gem and a marvel. I love her zest for life.
She shines!
And no doubt she’ll succeed at whatever she puts her mind to.
