GOP Approval Rating
Tumbles Under Trump

The Republican Party currently controls all branches of government in Washington. However, they would be smart not to get too comfortable in their positions of power, as the GOP approval rating is on the decline — and it’s all thanks to Donald Trump!

Politics
Remember the time Donald Trump promised that America was going to win win win so much, we’d all get tired of winning?  Well, that’s not going so well. The Republican Party appears to be feeling the side effects of Trump’s growing unpopularity among Americans.  With a series of recent polls showing “The Donald” in dangerous territory, some inside the party are already beginning to realize that the entire GOP could be in serious trouble.

House Speaker Paul Ryan

According to a new Gallup tracking poll, Trump’s job approval rating is at a miserable 38%. That matches a new NBC-Wall Street Journal poll that lists Trump’s job performance at 39% approval. A Quinnipiac University poll conducted before Trump fired FBI director James Comey rates his approval at a meager 36%, while the latest IBD/TIPP poll has him at a 34% approval.

Out of the majority of those polled, 58-33% disapprove of Trump’s handling of foreign policy; 57-39% disapprove of the way he is handling immigration issues; 61-29% disapprove of his handling of the environment, and Americans disapprove 48-41% of how Trump has dealt with the economy.

In contrast and at around the 120-day mark of their respective presidencies, Barack Obama was at 64% approval, George W. Bush stood at 56% and Bill Clinton was at 45%. For Donald Trump to pull up the rear at 38% is not at all a good sign for the GOP approval rating or their chances to retain power.

GOP Approval Rating
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell

For his comrades in congress, Republican support has dropped significantly over the past few weeks, with Americans now disapproving of Republicans 70% to 21%, which is a 14 point negative swing from just 2 weeks ago.

For example, a new HuffPost Pollster survey lists the current GOP approval rating at a disappointing 34.7%, which is down from its perch at 47% just prior to the Trump inauguration. Top Republican leaders are also feeling it at the polls. According to a recent Quinnipiac poll, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan has a negative favorability rating of 28-52%. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell also has a negative favorability rating of 14-47%.

Should congressional Republicans fear these numbers? YES! Despite the fact that the 2018 election is more than 500+ days away, not only should they be afraid, they should be VERY afraid.

Politics
“The Republican Party is in trouble, and if Donald Trump thinks he can somehow blame this on Paul Ryan or the House he’s completely wrong,” said former Republican representative and MSNBC host Joe Scarborough. “Their numbers are collapsing because of him,” he added.

Gallup’s Jeffrey Jones also weighed in on the dismal GOP approval rating.

“Since 1946, when presidents are above 50% approval, their party loses an average of 14 seats in the US House in the midterm elections, compared with an average loss of 36 seats when presidents are below that mark,” he said.

Needless to say, Donald Trump and his daily antics are pulling down the entire Republican Party.

Democrats need to win 24 seats to re-take control of the US House of Representatives.  They only need 3 seats to take over the US Senate.  With all of the baggage Donald Trump has brought to the party, combined with his Russia/Michael Flynn/James Comey scandal investigations that will last a year or more and prevent the GOP from accomplishing much, Republicans have every reason to already be concerned ahead of the 2018 midterm elections.

Mr. BD

No surprise here. Trump said he was going to drain the swamp so when he goes down he will take the rest of the Repubs with him.

"Trump said he was going to drain the swamp….."

Uh-huh. So he could make room for an even bigger swamp.

Regular readers know I'm no fan of polls. But (to echo BD) it's "no surprise here" IF the polls in fact are pretty accurate this time. But Dems should also be mindful of fact that general support for Trump during the campaign always hovered around 35-40%. It's was, and remains, much higher among Repub voters. Independents appear to be abandoning Trump and GOP. That's where the real decline seems to be. The challenge for Dems is two-fold: 1. Give voters a reason to for FOR you. Not just against Trump and the Repubs. And…. 2. Do whatever needs to be done to Get.Out.The.Vote.. Approx 92 million Americans did NOT bother to vote in the presidential election that put Trump in the White House. My guess is, most of those voters were Dems and Dem-leaning Independents. In the words of Pres. Obama "Elections have consequences." Raising H*ll is one thing. But… Read more »

The only way I will vote is to vote every incumbent out of office. The Congress does not protect our liberties , our ability to live our lives with decency and provides NO leadership or representation. I am encouraged by concerned, informed individuals that run for office that will demand tax reform, health reform, real education reform and protection of our civil liberties. The Congress has few individuals that are concerned with citizens of the United States. It's tiring to be fed continuous lies have our rights and our money taken from us for the benefit of the priveleged elite, corporations , and the very wealthy . Meanwhile catapulting the US and the entire planet to annhilation. I am not a Republican, a Democrat, nor a Libertarian. They all have the stench of greed and ignorance. The GOP may have felt they could put the Don in office and continue… Read more »

Our only hope is the common citizen of the US and the world. If people really care about the experience of their own life, our precious earth, and ALL of human life then there is much to be done. The majority of politicians are garbage! […]

Hear-Hear! Well said.

In fact, I appreciate your entire response.

CNN: Conditions are right for a major Democratic wave to sweep out the House Republican majority next fall, according to Nathan Gonzales, who runs the "Inside Elections" campaign tipsheet. "The midterm elections are still nearly a year and a half away, and the political dynamics could yet change, but we shouldn't ignore the fact that history and the current environment are merging together for a potentially great set of elections for Democrats in November 2018," writes Gonzales in a piece published Wednesday morning. To that end, Gonzales is adding nine Republican seats to his list of potentially competitive races and moving the ratings on 10 more GOP-held districts in favor of Democrats. That brings his list of competitive contests to 39 for Republicans as compared to just 14 for Democrats. As Gonzales notes, two factors argue for a wave election: History and polls. First, history. In the last 20 midterm… Read more »
